What is HIV & AIDS?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks your immune system by fighting cells that normally would protect you from infections. Since your body’s natural fighting cells are being destroyed, it makes it very difficult for your body to protect against infection and certain cancers. Over time, HIV can destroy the immune system and it then can progress into the most advanced stage call AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
More information can be provided by our staff. Call for a confidential consultation.
How do I Know if I Should Be Tested?
You should be tested even if you feel good. Many do not know they are infected. Not knowing puts you
and your loved ones at risk. Taking the test can put your mind at ease by learning your status.
You should take the test if you’ve answer yes to any of the questions below:
We have Free & Confidential HIV Testing's at many Low Country Health Care locations (see back page). Give any of these locations a call for scheduling information at 803-632-2533. Your EIS support team is available to you Monday – Friday,
8am-5pm.
HIV Prevention
If you do not have HIV, you should know about pre-exposure prophylaxis, PrEP for short. PrEP is medicine people at risk for HIV take to prevent getting HIV from sex or injection drug use. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV. We can help you with getting the medicine.

- If you DO NOT have HIV, PrEP is a prescription medication that’s taken daily by those who are at very high risk which helps prevents getting HIV. Condoms are still to be used for extra assurance.
- PEP is an antiretroviral drug used after a single or emergency high-risk event, such as condom break or rape, to stop HIV within the first 72 hours. Its not for frequent use.
