HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
Low Country Health Care System is a non-profit, 501(c)3, Primary Health Care Organization, and has provided health care services for over 40 years.
LCHCS was established in 1977 as the Allendale County Rural Health Program, Inc. This was in response to a significant community need for quality and cost effective primary care services for the area’s population. In 1998, it transitioned into Low Country Health Care System, Inc. as it began providing primary health care services to other communities and in 1999, the organization became a federally qualified health center. The initial site was established in Fairfax, SC and houses part of the administrative offices. Additional sites were added over the years and the organization now services Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell and Aiken Counties in South Carolina.
The organization has grown to include the Family Medical Center of Blackville (2001), Barnwell Family Medicine (2005), Barnwell Pediatrics (2014), Williston Family Medicine (2016), Padgett Family Practice in Bamberg (2018), and Barnwell Family Specialty Services (2019). Low Country Health Care System operates two pharmacies, located within Barnwell Family Medicine and the Fairfax Office. Low Country Health Care System also has an Early Intervention Services (EIS) facility in Bamberg (2018) and Aiken (2020), and a full Ryan White Early Intervention Services Department that provides confidential HIV and Aids care and support services at our locations.
As a Federally Qqualified Health Center, LCHCS provides primary care services to medically under-served communities and supports the collaborative efforts and advocates for the provision of equal access to quality, comprehensive health care services and the elimination of health disparities in South Carolina. We strive to improve the health of the people in our community by increasing access to integrated, comprehensive, primary and preventive healthcare, and related services while promoting economic development.
Our comprehensive approach enables us to treat the whole patient and promote collaboration among providers. We strive to identify and respond to health care needs that are specific to our communities. In addition to being the provider of choice, we aim to serve as a vital safety net for medically under-served and uninsured populations. Along with being socially responsible, LCHCS also plays a great role in the local economy as a taxpayer and job provider, with 200 employees across all of our sites.
Collectively, LCHCS sites treated 19,280 patients in 2019 and generated a total economic impact of $29.6 Million.
Low Country Health Care System, Inc. provides health care services to the residents of Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell and Aiken counties and to portions of Hampton County. All of these areas are defined as being medically under-served and are approved sites for providers through the National Health Service Corp.
